    why not just use a falling weight that you can control the speed of?

    why not use long ass threaded rod (about 2$) and attach 2 nuts to your camera holder . You can then spin that threaded rod with that drill and you have nice linear motion with your camera. Strings really looks silly.

    My young grand daughter got a 300 in 1 electronic lab kit for christmas. She has been following instructions and making things do things. I got to watch her today and had a 200 in 1 kit from long ago. We did not build anything but I talked to her about what the differant parts were doing. She is like a sponge on info. We did look up capacitor and a 2009 video popped up that had a guy with long hair. We watched it and she understood it. Good time learning elecronics.

    I think I'd have gone for a stepper motor turning a threaded rod. If you fix your tripod to a nut then the threaded rod would move it back and forth, kind of like a drive thread on a cnc. Granted, that may cost more than a drill after stepper, driver and threaded rod add up.

    Why bother buying and cutting up the drill? Use an existing quality drill you already own and attach it to the board with straps. A better motor probably would be smoother than a cheap drill anyway.

    Is the board prefinished? If not, I wonder if a light coat of wax might smooth things even more.

    An rc motor would probably work better. Then you can control the speed via remote controll. You can also easily go in reverse.

    Or you could have modified a cheap rc servo for continuous rotation, or bought a rc winch servo directly, they're like 8 bucks…not completely silent but much better,surprisingly strong and can be controlled with supercheap manual controllers or cheap remote control…not more than 35 bucks all out, or 15 manually controlled

    Nice and simple with a lot of opportunities to modify it to my own needs. Keep on doing these simple projects, so we can MAKE them.

    Taking things apart…I love it! You could use a turning poti for finer adjustment maybe? Making a rail to lower the friction would also be a great addition! Nice project, I'm gonna use some of the ideas :D

    The drill trigger switch looks like a linear slide potentiometer. You might get better control of the motor if you replace it with a 5 or 10-turn rotary pot of similar overall resistance. You've probably got one in your parts bin…

    Or just use a pushing screw for adjusting speed no need to disassemble a useful drill

    how about just adding wheels to the tripod. that would have been even simpler and cheaper.

    Mount the motor on one end and use a push-pull pulley system. Motor on one end, mounted on rubber, camera mount on opposite side. Hopefully this will reduce some noise. Still don't have to spend much. Just a thought.

    Why not just start with a cheaper corded drill, a couple of really cheap rechargable batteries, and a potentiometer?

    Awesome. I had initially thought, "threaded rod?" but that string was a way simpler solution. My only complaint – Not Enough Octopi.

    Add a cheap snap action/limit switch inline with the motor power attached to the normally closed terminal. Then when your sled reaches the top if will automatically break power to the motor.

    The main thing to take away from this video is that we all tend to have things around the house that can be re-purposed with a little thought and modification. Many of us will have old cordless drills with dead batteries to provide the donor motor, so as long as we have a cordless tool of equal or greater voltage we can with a little effort make a similar rig. As others have suggested, using Lego components is a great idea even if it is only a temporary proof test of concept before making a sturdier second unit. Guide rails would definitely be a good idea, I had visions of the camera and tripod sliding off the ramp and heading for the floor.

    Nice! To kick it up a nick- Instead of the $20 on the drill, what about a $11 low RPM 12v motor and a leftover wall wart power supply? you can add a reverse switching PWM speed controller with the extra money you save, if you wanna be super fancy, a whopping $2 over your original cost of the drill. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00HTZD9YI?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_search_detailpage

    String is cheap. Replace the ruined drill body with an eye screw. Operate the drill from a place 20, 30, or 40 feet away. Also, just chuck up a nail. The small diameter will wind very slowly.
