having a long/flat outfeed on the planer has eliminated snipe for me completely.

I love watching Josh!!! Bob, This is a pivotal step in scaling your ILTMS brand into something bigger than yourself. Congrats on taking the plunge and introducing a new on-screen personality. I can totally see ILTMS becoming like SciShow or Mental Floss with multiple contributors but with a central focus on inspiring and equipping makers of all kinds. Hope to see more of Josh AND Bob!!!

We use β€œclip” for snipe at work

Another way to minimize snipe is to take a final few passed at a 64th or so at a time on the planer. Can leave a nice snipe free finish. I am cheap so if I am working with nice hard wood I dont want to cut off the ends as waste. Just another tip for anyone.

Well done Josh, good to see you in front of the camera! Glad you talked about snipe as well. The one tip I may add to help folks is dealing with grain direction. If the board is fighting a bit or chattering, or getting a bunch of tearout, check to see that the jointer or planer is not cutting against the grain – I learned the hard way when I had a piece of cathedral grain from oak get knocked out of the board altogether in the planer lol… The whole grain direction thing takes a little to explain, so maybe could be a Bits video in itself! Good one as always guys! – Jim

You should also mention that when you milled your lumber, you should use it the same day to prevent warping or cupping. Your project just goes better together that way!

I might be wrong, but I think that you can get a little better cut if you use a specific sled for the last cut. The videos method works great but this might be something that you want to look up if accuracy is really important to you.
